WARREN COUNTY, N.C. -- A North Carolina teen is headed to New York for a qualifying Kyokushin karate match.

  • Christian Buffaloe has been training with his father, who is a black belt in the sport, most of his life.
  • He is working on winning championships and hopes to fight in the Olympics one day.
  • He will compete in New York at the end of June.

Christian Buffaloe has been training with his father, who is a black belt in the sport, most of his life.

Now, the younger Buffaloe is working on winning championships and hopes to fight in the Olympics one day.

"It's a dream of mine to represent America in the Olympics," said Christian. "Maybe one day that'll change and they'll put Kyokushin in the Olympics. I'm a little disappointed but still focus on fighting."

Christian's dad, Kenny, says the Olympics doesn't have that particular style of karate. Kyokushin uses the knock down system instead of the point system.

Buffaloe is 19 years old and trains twice a day.

He will compete in New York at the end of June. That competition will determine if he goes to Japan.
