RALEIGH, N.C. -- A number of events are happening across central North Carolina to honor our heroes on Memorial Day.

  • Members and veterans of the Marine Corps will gather at the capital grounds in Raleigh, starting at 10:45 a.m.
  • A ceremony is happening in Durham. That gets underway at 9 a.m. on the front steps of the Durham County administration building
  • In the Fayetteville, children of fallen service members will run a memorial day 5k in honor of their parents

Members and veterans of the Marine Corps will gather at the capital grounds in Raleigh, starting at 10:45 a.m., to celebrate and recognize those who lost their lives fighting for our country.

There will be music, a wreath laying, and a special guest speaker.

Also in the Triangle, a ceremony is happening in Durham. That gets underway at 9 a.m. on the front steps of the Durham County administration building.

Everyone is invited out to the event.

Officials will hold a roll call for Durham County's more than 350 active duty service members who died at war.

 

 

The event is free, with parking available in the Durham County Social Services parking lot.

And in the Fayetteville, children of fallen service members will run a memorial day 5k in honor of their parents.

Anyone wanting to attend to support them is asked to arrive at the Jordan Soccer Complex ahead of the race at 8:30 a.m. and wear blue.

In Downtown Raleigh, the historic Oakwood Cemetery will hold a ceremony for deceased veterans at the Veteran's Field of Honor at 4 p.m.
