LILLINGTON, N.C. -- An early morning crash in Lillington has killed a mother and her young daughter.

  • A mother and her daughter were killed in a Lillington crash.
  • The other daughter and twin to the 11-year-old killed, survived, but has serious injuries.
  • The driver of the tractor trailer is expected to be OK.

The crash happened between Mamers and Raven Rock roads.

Friends and family have been posting on Facebook mourning the loss of 46-year-old Venita Vandergriff and her 11-year-old daughter, Zariyah. Her twin sister, Amiyah, survived the crash but was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center with serious injuries.

Pictures of their SUV show just how bad the wreck was. The State Highway Patrol confirms this all happened early Tuesday morning when the mother's SUV crossed the center line and crashed head-on with a southbound tractor trailer.

Crews worked to clean-up some of the debris on Tuesday morning. The driver of the tractor trailer is expected to be OK, but he was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Investigators still haven't determined the cause of the crash, but say there is no reason to believe that alcohol or drugs played a factor at this point.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the victims' family.
