The Sheriff’s Office says emergency officials were called to 102 Den Court regarding a child being injured by a gunshot.

The mother, who was the only other person there, says she was in the living room when she heard  a loud noise come from the bedroom. When she went to investigate, she reports that’s when she found the child injured on the bed.

Authorities say a small gun was also found on the bed and no bullets are thought to have entered the house from the outside.

The incident is a reminder to gun owners to always keep firearms locked away when in the same home as a minor.

"Depending on the size of the gun, you can use a lock in a car or at home," said Danny Nicely from Newport Gun Shop and Indoor Range. "You have a particular key and, again, state law requires that a gun be locked up any time it can be accessible to a child."

According to a study published by the Medical Journal, Pediatrics, gun-related deaths among American children, ages one through five, doubled between 2006 and 2016.
