FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Drivers in downtown Fayetteville could see some changes in parking.

  • City leaders hired a consultant who suggested getting rid of the free two to three-hour parking options.
  • Instead, drivers would use a kiosk that accepts coins, credit cards and even payments through a parking app.
  • Consultants believe that would end drivers' frustrations who stay past their parking time and get a citation.

City leaders hired a consultant who suggested getting rid of the free two to three-hour parking options. Instead, drivers would use a kiosk that accepts coins, credit cards and even payments through a parking app.

Consultants believe that would end drivers' frustrations who stay past their parking time and get a citation. Officials said the city could bring in up to about $100,000 in the first four years.

"I don't think the constitution affords us the right to have free parking and that city needs to make money to make ends meet these days," Fayetteville resident Rob Clayton said.

"I mean I'm against it, but that's me personally," Cumberland County resident Kelly Goodman said. "I just feel like people like to be able to come down here and park for free and things like that."

City leaders said they'll be meeting on February 4 to discuss the idea more in depth and decide if going a paid route is the best route.
