WILSON COUNTY, N.C. – Three men have been arrested after a NC State Trooper was shot in the line of duty Monday afternoon.

  • Trooper D.C. Harrell was shot during a traffic stop  on Sharon Acres Road in Elm City Monday.
  • John Jones is accused of shooting him.
  • Jones was taken into custody around midnight.

Police say John Jones, 36, is in custody accused of shooting Trooper D.C. Harrell during a traffic stop  on Sharon Acres Road in Elm City around 5 p.m. Jones has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries and assault on a law enforcement officer.

William Boswell, 40, and Bryan Mullins, 25, have also been arrested in connection to this case. They are both in the Wilson County Detention Center charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Trooper Harrell is recovering from serious, but non-life threatening injuries. 

He's a third generation highway patrol officer, son of a retired sergeant and grandson of a retired trooper as well.

Trooper Harrell is a graduate from Southwest Edgecombe in Pinetops, and according to his Facebook page, his wife Jennifer works at East Carolina University.

In a statement from DPS Secretary Erik A. Hooks said: “I spoke with Trooper Harrell last night and appreciate his service, his bravery and his dedication. On behalf of the DPS Leadership team, I want him and his family to know that we support him and pray for his smooth and speedy recovery."
