DURHAM, N.C. -- Durham residents told their neighbors to put the guns down during a march on Saturday.

  • March was held in Durham's Hayti neighborhood
  • Leaders say it takes more than prayers to keep communities safe
  • A quilt was made showing the names of people shot and killed in Durham

The Stop Killing Us March, organized by the statewide coalition of the same name, went through Durham's Hayti neighborhood.  The march also featured a 15-foot long quilt with the names of people shot and killed in Durham.

Stop Killing Us leader Rev. Curtis Gatewood says it will take more than prayers to keep Durham safe.

"We keep hearing the African proverb 'it takes a village to raise a child,' but where is the village," said Gatewood. "We need to put the neighbor back in the hood."

The event was also attended by Durham mayor Steve Schewel and Durham County Sheriff candidate Clarence Birkhead.
