HOPE MILLS, N.C. -- After nearly eight years, Hope Mills lake is back. The damaged dam is repaired, and the water has been refilled.
- The Hope Mills Dam has been repaired and the lake has returned.
- The park is open to the public.
- No pets are allowed at the park.
But a rule regarding four-legged friends may soil summer plans for some.
A new sign states no pets are allowed by the lake or recreational areas.
"The purpose of the new rule is we have pets that are people-friendly, and we have pets that aren't people friendly," said Parks and Recreation Director, Kenny Bullock. "We also have people who are afraid of animals."
Town officials say they've gotten complaints about dog waste too, but some residents still want to enjoy the 'dog days' of summer.
"It's ridiculous," said Hope Mills resident, Angela Wilson. "It's the only open-water area we really have here, and you can't bring your dogs? If you pick-up after them and keep them on a leash, I don't see what the big deal is."
Pets are allowed on the walking trail that starts in front of the lake.
