RALEIGH -- A shooting in the 300 block of South Blount Street in downtown Raleigh Thursday appears to have been in self-defense.

  • Shooting happened on Blount Street around 3:30 p.m.
  • Shooter fired weapon in self-defense
  • The person who was shot has been charged with robbery. 

According to the Raleigh Police Department, 23-year-old Morgen Matthews was walking down South Blount Street near the intersection of Davie Street when Jonathan Tyrone Peace, 28, attempted to rob her. 

Matthews fired the weapon striking Peace in the chest to stop him from attacking her.

Peace was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Matthews remained on scene until police arrived.
