DURHAM, N.C. -- Durham residents are remembering a Chinese restaurant owner shot and killed during the weekend.

  • Hong Zheng was shot and killed
  • Zheng owned China Wok in Durham
  • Family grateful for the support

The lights at China Wok in Durham are dark. They've been this way ever since its owner, 42-year-old Hong Zheng lost his life last week.

"I miss him, you know? We've been friends. We've been neighbors and I feel bad for his family. I miss him and I feel bad," Sam Dinh, a friend of the family said.

Dozens of people brought a light of their own Friday night. The vigil for Zheng and his family showed just how beloved he and his restaurant were in the community and just how sad people were when they learned he was shot and killed in his driveway.

The family wasn't in attendance, but they did tell the organizers they were grateful for the ceremony.

"We have their back. We're thinking of them and we're grieving and mourning with them," resident Jerolyn Hamer said.

Prayers and flowers flank China Wok's front door and the lights inside may never come on again. It just shows how hard Zheng's death hit for some and how sad it was that they couldn't say goodbye.
