Snow that fell in parts of North Carolina this past weekend should be the final snowfall for the season for most if not all of the state.  Snow is extremely rare in April outside of the mountains. Even in western North Carolina, snow is unusual for April.

Statewide snowfall totals from November 2017 through March 2018 from the State Climate Office show most of the state measured above average snowfall this winter. Raleigh's almost nine-inch snowfall for the year was the most measured in the capital city since 2014. Greensboro finished the winter with just under 15 inches and Charlotte saw just over four.  That was the most snow in both cities since 2014.

The above average snowfall was a bit unexpected due to this winter's La Niña pattern. Most La Niña winters feature below average snowfall in the Carolinas. However, that is not always the case. The winter of 1999-2000 is a good example. In that La Niña winter, a surprise winter storm in January produced a record almost two feet of snow in Raleigh from just one storm.
