Snow is falling in parts of North Carolina on this Monday, March 12, 2018. It is interesting to note though that a much stronger winter storm was impacting the state on this same date 25 years ago. That storm produced snow from Mississippi and Alabama to New England.
A storm that was called "The 1993 Superstorm" and "The Storm of the Century" produced up to 50 inches of snow on Mount Mitchell from March 12 through 14, 1993. Much of western North Carolina had over a foot of snow during the storm including Asheville which measured just over 18 inches. Snowfall was lighter outside of the mountains. Charlotte record 1.6 inches and Raleigh saw just under an inch.
The storm impacted most of the eastern United States setting all time records for the lowest measured barometric pressure in Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro and Wilmington.
The 1993 Superstorm was more than just a winter storm as it produced tornadoes and damaging straight line winds in Florida. Strong wind gusts also cause damage and beach erosion along the North Carolina coast.
