CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. -- Class was in session at the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office Tuesday evening, but the subject was on something no one was excited to learn -- preparation for an active shooter situation.
Officers taught religious leaders what to do if a mass shooter comes and terrorizes their place of worship.
After the deadly church shootings in Charleston, South Carolina three years ago and in Texas last year, some faith leaders decided to take a harder stance on safety.
"That was my wake up call," said Grace & Truth Church's Thomas Grant. "That's where I said 'we need to do something now and we need to be ready now.' That's what we're doing right now. When you look and see all of the people that were here, it wasn't just a wake up call for me, but for all of those who care about the people that we serve."
Nearly 100 religious leaders attended the sheriff's office class.
