RALEIGH -- N.C. First Lady Kristin Cooper applied for a REAL ID on Tuesday and encouraged the public to do the same.

The card will let any federal agency know that your identification, your social security number, and your address has been verified by the state.

The federal government will start requiring the use of the REAL ID or , in lieu of it, ask for more documentation when boarding a commercial airplane or entering a federal facility.
