RALEIGH – A former teacher in Raleigh has been charged with having sex with one of his students.

36-year-old Nicholas Conlon Smith faces multiple charges of statutory rape and remains in the Wake County Detention Center under an increased bond.

An emotionless Nicholas smith stood before a judge on Wednesday and learned of the staggering 16 sexual assault charges against him.

These aren't run of the mill statutory rape accusations. Smith taught at the Montessori School of Raleigh and the charges center around a 14-year-old student at the school.

He faces four counts of felony sex offense by a teacher against a student. The charges, which the Montessori school called "extremely disturbing", focus on a relationship Smith may have had with the student from 2011 to 2012.

If he's found guilty of statutory rape, he could serve the rest of his life in prison.

There's a chance it may get worse for Smith. The Wake County assistant district attorney says even more potential victims could come forward.

We are told two different victims and all indications are there may be more charges.

Smith will likely await his trial in a cell as the judge felt his original one million dollar bond wasn't high enough.

"Based on the number of charges and the level of charges I am going to increase your bond. I'm going to increase it to two million dollars," the judge told Smith.

Smith will return to court on later in November.
