Hurricane Maria will remain off the Carolina Tuesday as it slowly moves to the north. It will have very little impact on the weather in most of North Carolina through the day. However, the Outer Banks will feel effects from the storm especially when it comes to storm surge.
A constant northerly wind will push water from the Atlantic and sounds up along sections of the Outer Banks creating a two to four foot storm surge. That may cause ocean overwash along sections of Highway 12.
A sound-side storm surge is also possible in parts of Craven County and near the Crystal Coast in Carteret County.
The heaviest rain with Hurricane Maria will remain off shore, but the storm's outer bands could bring one to two inches of rain to the Outer Banks through Wednesday.
Wind gusts between 40 to 60mph are forecast for the Outer Banks.
