NATIONWIDE -- More than 400 employees at Lowe's corporate headquarters in Mooresville lost their jobs on Tuesday.

The news comes just a month after 2,400 workers nationwide were laid off from the company.

Several of them had been with the company for more than 15 years.

Lowe's let go of 430 employees at the Mooresville corporate office, about 70 people in Wilkesboro and 25 more in other facilities.

A spokesman for the company called the decision difficult, but necessary.

This latest round of layoffs is part of an effort to overhaul the organizational structure of Lowe's to better serve customers.

All affected employees were given severance pay and other benefits to help them through this transition.

The Town of Mooresville says it will do whatever it can to support the hundreds of employees who were given the pink slip today.

"The town is committed, and we will look out for those folks as taxpayers and the surrounding area, and anything we can do to help. We're always there," said Eddie Dingler, commissioner for the Town of Mooresville.

Despite the layoffs, Lowe's is still one of the state's top three largest employers.

The company recently announced it plans to hire 600 people at its facilities in Wilkesboro. So the company says its employment presence in North Carolina will remain consistent.
