HILLSBOROUGH -- A recent report has many wondering who else is buried at the Old Town Cemetery that's unknown.

It started back in August when town officials wanted to investigate an open area at the cemetery.

"Well there was a lot of controversy over who's actually in this open area. Is it empty? Are there burials here? And we wanted to find that out," said Ken Ostrand, Hillsborough Cemetery Committee Chairman.

The town hired a company to conduct a radar survey. Two weeks ago, a preliminary report showed there were disturbances underground, and it's possible that nearly 100 unmarked graves are within the cemetery.

"Well some of these are most likely poor individuals, who just couldn't afford a grave or a stone marker."

A final report is expected next spring. Ostrand says plans are already underway to place memorial markers at the sites. But he said the town may never truly know if people are buried there without disturbing the sacred space.

"Because the town and the county really don't want to do an excavation, unless there's a necessary reason for that."
