NATIONAL – A comet is emitting large amount of alcohol and sugar, according to new observations by NASA.
Comet Lovejoy has been releasing ethyl alcohol—the same type that is found in alcoholic drinks—which is the first time this has been observed in a comet.
Glycolaldehyde, a simple sugar, is also in the gas coming from the comet.
NASA said it was leaving a trail of alcohol that is equivalent to at least 500 bottles of wine per second during its peak activity.
Comets are frozen remnants from the formation of the solar system, which hold clues to how the solar system was made.
