SILER CITY, N.C. – An airplane crashed Tuesday morning near the Siler City Municipal Airport in Chatham County, killing one person and injuring the other.
Barbara and Fred Para were both transported to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital with serious injuries. Barbara Para later died from her injuries.
Fred Para was listed in stable condition.
The single propeller plane was a Beechcraft Bonanza that has room for six people, but the couple was the only two people onboard.
Authorities say the plane was apparently trying to land at the airport and airport manager Karen McCraw said the plane came down in some woods near the runway.
Officials say the couple flew out of Southern Pines Airport. The mechanic at Guardian Aviation Services says their plane was scheduled for its annual check up.
This is the fifth crash at the Siler City Airport in the last 22 years, according to airport officials.
The NTSB is still investigating the crash.
