WILMINGTON -- A little over two months ago, the family-owned Folks Cafe opened up their second location in the Brooklyn Arts District of downtown Wilmington.
Co-owner Tammy Pacini said they picked the perfect spot.
"When we looked for this place we didn't have an idea, but the buildings over there and all the developments start coming-- then you go like-- 'really, I hit the lotto," said Pacini.
In the past year, the district has seen a significant amount of growth, with the opening of new local businesses like Detour Deli.
Wilmington Downtown Incorporated President & CEO, Ed Wolverton said "We're also seeing housing coming in, which is really important to our entire economic growth for downtown. So City Block Apartments have opened there, adding 115 units that will be part of that Brooklyn Arts District."
Bigg Redd's Barber Shop is also new to the area. Downtown Wilmington officials said there's the potential for much more.
"There are still some pretty strategic properties that are in this location. Whether they are empty fields right now or some larger buildings, there's a 25,000 square foot building that could very easily be converted to some more dynamic use," said Wolverton.
If it were up to Pacini, she'd have more restaurants in the district.
"Mediterranean food or like, you know, Moroccan or something like that. It would be so exciting," said Pacini.
Pacini said the Brooklyn Arts District is truly, "A perfect place. It is, you know, anyone that really want to start a business, this area, it's the perfect way."
Downtown Wilmington officials said they have plans for even more housing in the Brooklyn Arts District, with condominium units currently under plan review.
