FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Hundreds of people gathered at Hendrick Stadium in Fort Bragg on Saturday to remember the fallen.

Boots memorialize the more than 7,000 servicemen and women that have been killed in all branches of the military since the attack on September 11, 2001.

Family members, friends and comrades got to pay their respects, and do a little running in honor of those who served our country.

The 5K fun run was in remembrance of those names and faces displayed on the boots.

One of the organizers, Teresa Johnson, said for some seeing the boots is healing.

"They will, you know, touch these boots, they'll pick them up they'll write messages, they'll spend hours with them,” said Johnson.

There is a 5K run on post once a month, but organizers said this one is more symbolic than most as Saturday marked National Armed Forces Day.
