RALEIGH, N.C. - ‘Shrimp and grits’ with a twist is just one of many classics Tupelo Honey reinvented by adding a modern twist to traditional southern cuisine.
Over the years, the Asheville-based restaurant has captured attention across our state and across the country.
Many of the dishes are considered a revival of Southern classics like the ‘Shoo Mercy Shrimp and Grits' which is a flavorful blend of chorizo, sauteed kale, and tomatoes topped with a friend egg.
"It's very rich and very filling. It's like breakfast and lunch and dinner in one plate. Visually you eat with your eyes first and then you eat with your stomach. So, if it looks good it's going to taste good," said Andrew Barrett, the kitchen manager of Tupelo Honey.
Avocado lovers can get their fix with the grilled chicken and avocado sandwich which includes a a marinated gluten-free chicken breast, a scoop of avocado mash, and havarti cheese melted inside.
"It's one of our favorite sandwiches here," added Barrett.
Tupelo Honey opened its first location in Asheville more than 15 years ago. It has been considered as one of the first farm-to-table restaurants in that region.
Every dish on the menu incorporated fresh, localled-sourced ingredients, and the latest food trends.
"We love being scratch-made. We really still take pride in locally resourcing our food all the way to our beverage department," said MaryEllen Smith, general manager of Tupelo Honey.
The 'Spicy Cauliflower Bites' are one of the most recent items that has gained popularity on the menu.
The appetizer featuers beer battered and lightly fried cauliflower florets with sliced jalapeños, green tomato aioli and a sriracha honey drizzle.
Tupelo Honey’s ‘Bloody Mary’ has become a crowd favorite during the weekend brunch.
"We do a pickled okra on there, we hand stuff our homemade pimento cheese olives and it is fantastic. I love everything about this restaurant," Smith said.
Tupelo Honey has additional North Carolina locations in Charlotte and Asheville.
