RALEIGH, N.C.— With summer break upon us, parents and kids are working hard to figure out their new routines. And the last thing many adults want to see is their kids stuck on the couch watching T.V., surfing the web or playing video games every waking hour.

That’s why fitness expert Olo Onuma has created a program for kids called Evolution Lifestyle Fitness, aimed at getting and keeping them active, but also safe when exercising. He told Spectrum News anchor Caroline Blair, creating these habits early, is vital to molding a lifetime of fitness.  Below are some tips for parents and kids to keep in mind when tackling the task of moving and exercising.    

Getting Your Kids Moving Over the Summer Months

DRESS THE PART:

  • Proper fitness attire is key.
  • Kids should wear clothing suitable for physical activity 
  • If it’s hot, make sure they’re wearing drywick, breathable clothes
  • If it’s cold, make sure they’re properly covered up
  • If they’re playing contact sports, helmets or eye masks are key 
  • If it’s sunny, wearing proper sunglasses is also important 
  • No matter your age, proper footwear and supported shoes are incredibly important when moving and exercising 

MEET THEM WHERE THEY ARE:   

  • When your kids are young, don’t push them to do more than they can 
  • The duration, intensity and frequency of fitness training should be controlled 
  • Think low speeds on cardio equiptment 
  • Your child should not be training with traditional weights or equipment 
  • Feel free to use basic body weight exercises, medicine balls and monitored TRX cables if you’re properly trained 

TEACH PROPER FORM:

  • Safety is the number one priority 
  • Be extra attentive to your child’s exercise form 
    Pay attention to aches and injuries 
  • Incorporate games and make fitness fun!
