CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Dr. Thomas Bice takes care of some of the sickest Coronavirus patients at UNC Hospitals.

"This is the most severe pandemic certainly in my career," he tells Spectrum News.

Bice, 39, works in the ICU at the main campus. He not only takes care of patients but balances that with his other job duties.

"It's not been overwhelming yet which is good. We are hopeful that all of the measures that have been taken will slow that peak and reduce it," he says.

He admits the outbreak can take a mental toll, especially since patients cannot be around their families. However, he wants to be able to communicate with relatives about their incapacitated loved ones, as patients aren't allowed any visitors.

Bice is a husband and father of two but doesn't worry about getting the virus. He believes his family is at little risk too but takes precautions when he goes home.

"I change out of my hospital scrubs into clean scrubs at the hospital before I come home," he adds.

Bice reminds people while it's good to thank doctors and nurses, there are many other employees in the hospitals who also deserve an applause.

"Our environmental services people are amazing. They go into any room, any time and clean it up after some of the worst possible things that happened  in that room," he says.
