Thousands of students at universities in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill will toss their mortarboards in the air this weekend and receive their degrees.

It will be a busy weekend in every corner of the Triangle with commencement ceremonies planned at every major university in the area.

Rain could get in the way of some of the festivities. N.C. Central University’s undergraduate ceremony was moved inside Friday morning as rain loomed over the area.

"Scattered showers and storms are possible Saturday. While the severe weather threat will be much lower compared to Friday, any outdoor plans may need to move inside," Spectrum News 1 meteorologist Lee Ringer said.

"Sunday may then feel chilly compared to what has been a very warm week. Temperatures in parts of the state will be closer to normal for early March than Mother’s Day," Ringer said.

Former New York Times columnist and UNC-Chapel Hill alum Frank Bruni will give the commencement address for Tar Heel graduates. At Duke University, General Motors CEO Mary Barra will speak at the graduation ceremony.

At N.C. State, international business leader Mohamed Mansour will give the commencement speech.
