Thursday's cloudy, gloomy and damp weather will give way to a frosty Friday morning from the Triad to Charlotte and the Triangle.

What You Need To Know

  • Many areas will be at or below freezing by sunrise Friday

  • We can expect frost in areas that stay above freezing

  • A Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory are in effect across the region

  • After a cold start, Friday will be sunny and warmer

Considering we saw highs only in the 40s Thursday afternoon, the temperature doesn't have to go too far to hit the freezing mark. We will see clearing skies tonight, and with cold air in place, temperatures will drop quickly.

A Freeze Warning is in effect for most of the region, with surrounding counties in a Frost Advisory from 2 a.m. until 10 a.m. Friday morning.

The NWS issues a Freeze Warning when low temperatures are forecast to be 32 degrees or lower. They issue a Frost Advisory if temperatures could range from 33-36 degrees, as frost can typically occur when temperatures drop below 36 degrees.

Take steps now to protect sensitive plants, and since we expect a freeze, you may want to drain your in-ground sprinkler system.

This is actually a little late for the first frost for the Triad and Charlotte areas, as we usually see it by the end of October. For Raleigh, we expect it the first week in November, so it's right on time.
