WILKESBORO, N.C. — NASCAR fans are traveling from all over to attend the first official race of the week at the North Wilkesboro speedway.

High Point resident Gary Booher is one of many who got to the track bright and early to watch the pros practice.
He said he has been a racing fan his entire life and grew up coming to the North Wilkesboro Speedway before its closing in 1996.
Booher said it feels incredible to be back and hear the roar of the speedway.
“There is just excitement. You can feel the engine, and up here where we are — you can feel the rumble,” Booher explained.
The Fan Zone opened up at the speedway Tuesday, and will be open on Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Fan Fest began Thursday afternoon.
Every day, NASCAR fans have the opportunity to play games, win prizes and shop for souvenirs.
It's part of a series of NASCAR All-Star Race events, which run through Sunday, the day of the All-Star Race.
“I hope North Carolina takes notice and keeps the local tracks open, keeps them going,” Booher said.
