Voters from Bryson City, deep in the North Carolina mountains, to Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks, will head to the polls this fall to cast ballots. There are thousands of candidates running for mayor, town council and other local seats across the state.
There are elections for 984 local offices in North Carolina this year, including races for mayor and city council in Charlotte, Durham and Fayetteville.
Most municipal elections in North Carolina come on odd years, with some notable exceptions like Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Asheville.
Primary elections in Charlotte and Sanford are set for Sept. 12. Other counties with partisan primaries will hold those elections on Oct. 10.
The General Election will be held on Nov. 7, with early voting starting Oct. 19.
This will be the first election to require voters to show photo ID to cast a ballot after a North Carolina Supreme Court ruling earlier this year.
