HIGH POINT, N.C. — New low-emission school buses could be heading to a district near you.

A manufacturer called Thomas Built Buses in High Point is behind the environmental benefits and cleaner rides for kids. General Manager Kelly Rivera said currently, there's only one electric school bus in operation in the state.

"Bus drivers love the ride, love the way the bus handles, operates," Rivera said. "Students benefit from the decreased emissions, it's so much cleaner vehicle than your standard diesel bus. So it's a win-win all around."

In the first phase of the Clean School Bus Program, North Carolina received $12 million worth of awards for electric vehicles. 

In addition to the EPA funds, Governor Roy Cooper approved over $30 million from the Volkswagen settlement program to also fund clean school bus replacements.
