GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro Police Department is teaming up with Cone Health and Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest N.C. to provide free produce to anyone who needs it.
The Greensboro Mobile Food Market runs on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Freeman Mill Square on West Florida Street.
The Greensboro Community Connector Core Team conducted a survey in select neighborhoods in District 2 that identified food insecurity as a community issue.
"The data from the surveys revealed the food desert area, high crime in this area, lack of resources in this area," explained community resource officer LaTonya Guy, who serves in that district.
She said anyone who visits the market can receive bags of fruit and vegetables.
Cone Health and Second Harvest Food Bank donated the produce.
They also receive a community grant to help fund the program.
"We like to promote a healthy lifestyle, so we are offering fresh fruits and vegetables because there are no grocery stores in the area,” Guy said.
As high inflation continues to impact families, similar programs in Durham and Asheville are working to give communities access to nutritious foods.
The Greensboro Mobile Food Market will continue through June.
After that, organizers hope to partner with other pantries to keep the resource available.
