WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A program in Forsyth County is helping students prepare for college enrollment.
African American Males Pursuing Educational Dreams, or AAMPED, helps recruit Black students into Crosby Scholars which is a college access program.
Trevor Whitehead, 18, is one of the members. He says his goal is to go to college and then help the next generation by using the skills, confidence, and knowledge he’s gained.
“Be responsible and also be generous towards others," Whitehead says. "And also recognize that we as Black males can do anything anyone else can do in this community.”
Organizers say that inspiration is the goal.
“Young men need encouragement," says AAMPED coordinator Richard Watts. "They need to know that there are other young men out there who have made it and are successful. And all kinds of opportunities are out there for them.”
Since AAMPED began, the completion rate of Black males in the Crosby Scholars program has increased by 19%.
