CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- More UNC professors are choosing to teach only remote classes after seeing some students not take the COVID-19 threat seriously.

"My rule of thumb was I said that if I see three violations in one week, I'll just go all remote," French Professor Hassan Melehy says. He originally planned to teach in-person and virtual classes.

The final straw for Melehy came this week after online video surfaced, which showed students not taking any precautions.

The video showed dozens of female students leaving an off-campus house in close proximity to each other and not wearing any masks. The university is looking to see if a sorority was involved.

"The idea that there was such large groups of students completely unwilling to comply with protocols," Melehy adds.

Melehy, 60, says he will teach virtually for the entire fall semester. He hopes to return to the classroom in the spring semester if conditions improve.

"I'd love to return to campus, full-time in January," he says.
