FORT BRAGG — The Intrepid Spirit Center (ISC) specializes in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries or TBIs. After the recent Iranian missle attack against two U.S. bases in Iraq where dozens of US troops suffered TBIs, more attention is being focused on this kind of injury.

In 2019, 5,000 patients sought help at the ISC for concussion like symptoms. Unlike a broken arm, which can be seen and treated with a cast, brain injuries are often not visible.

"Outwardly, someone may look normal but yet still have impairments. So being able to recognize injury when it happens, reassure patients, and get them the treatment they need is key for us," said Commander Scott Klimp, director of the Center.

Officials there could not comment on whether any of the soldiers injured in the Iranian attack were being treated at Fort Bragg.

There are 10 different Intrepid Spirit Centers spread throughout the Defense Department.

Treatments are geared to each individual patient. They are tested and challenged to help them recuperate and get back to something like a normal life.
