WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- A historic landmark in North Carolina, The Tavern in Old Salem, is closing at the end of the month.

Owner Rick Keiper said it's the oldest continuously running tavern in the state and long-time customers are devastated.

The Tavern opened in 1972, but Keiper said it’s more than just a tavern, it’s a community hub with a lot of history.

“We've had so many friends who have come as guests and left as friends and that's what we will appreciate and will miss the most,” Keiper said.

Keiper said the last meal will be served on New Year’s Eve and reservations are recommended.

Old Salem officials said they'll be looking for proposals to re-open a restaurant in the building, after they make the building more ADA accessible.
