- City council is expected to vote on the new name next week
The General Government Committee in Winston-Salem settled on the name "The Carolina Classic" during a meeting Tuesday night.
Winston-Salem city leaders decided months ago to change the fair's name, after some said the word "Dixie" has racist undertones.
The Dixie Classic dates back to a time when African-Americans were not allowed to attend. They could only attend their own "Carolina Colored Fair".
Committee members who decided on the new name say "The Carolina Classic" represents both sides of history.
City council is expected to vote on the new name next week.
