GREENSBORO, N.C.--The city of Greensboro is working to preserve African American architectural heritage.

The city was awarded a $12,000 federal historic preservation grant to document historic buildings designed and built by African Americans in the city.
Officials say those surveys will start on Benbow Park which features mid-century modern architecture and black architects.
“It’s an unusual chapter in North Carolina history that we have this collection in Greensboro of black designed buildings from the 1950’s and 60’s,” said Benjamin Briggs, Executive Director for Preservation Greensboro. “And I think there’s a lot of community pride in the city to recognize and celebrate those styles."
The inventory will identify sites that may be eligible for listing in the national register of historical places or local designations.
Project plans will start this fall.
