WINSTON-SALEM -- New statistics rank North Carolina 13th among states with the highest rate of skin cancer in the nation.

  • Dermatologists say people don't have to change their lifestyle, they just have to be smart about it.

The most recent CDC cancer statistics report that North Carolina saw 26.2 cases of melanoma per 100,000 people.

Dermatologist Dr. William Huang, explained people don't have to change their lifestyle, they just have to be smart about it.

“Try to avoid the peak hours of sunlight, and that's typically between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., if they can. If that's not possible, always wear sunscreen, sun protection,” said Dr. Huang.

The Skin Cancer Foundation advises people to examine their skin head to toe every month, and see a dermatologist at least once year for a professional exam.
