“We thank Dr. Dawkins for her time and contribution to Bennett College, especially her leadership during challenging times and her dedication to the Bennett Community,” said Dr. Gladys Robinson, chairwoman of the Bennett College Board of Trustees and North Carolina State Senator. “We look forward to securing new leadership that will take the college to the next level.”
Officials issued a statement acknowledging her leadership and role with the Stand With Bennett campaign, which helped the college raise more than $9.5 million while dealing with issues with accreditation. The college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and is seeking accreditation from a national agency.
We’re told Dr. Gwendolyn O’Neal will serve as interim president while the college searches for its next leader. O’Neal previously served as a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and as an associate professor at Bennett College.
Officials expect to name Dawkins' successor by the start of the new academic year.
