Last week, the city’s board of commissioners voted to tear down the old Spencer's Mill after it was declared structurally unsound this year.
Demolition to the building started last November and will cost the city over $280,000.
Officials said the project will help to give the area a new look.
“We’re trying to use the best judgment that we have as a city and city board and we hope that one day it’ll be what we all envisioned it could be,” said Mayor David Rowe, Mount Airy.
Some residents say they are excited. “I’m for expansion,” said Larry Key. “Mount Airy needs it. We need it bad. I’m for hotel, a convention center, city park, apartments, anything that’ll bring jobs an people into this area.”
Mayor Rowe said they've also already started construction on a new 65-unit apartment complex and plan to turn another old building in the area into a hotel.
