BURLINGTON, N.C. -- A former Alamance County school teacher is in jail on allegations of inappropriate behavior with a student.

  • Derrick Covington was a teacher at Broadview Middle School 
  • He also volunteered for the joint band program at Cummings High School
  • Anyone with more information is asked to contact the Burlington Police Department

Friday, Burlington police officers arrested 32-year-old Derrick Covington for indecent liberties and solicitation to commit sexual activity with a student by a teacher. Cummings high school staff notified investigators on Tuesday and until Thursday he was an eighth grade teacher at Broadview Middle School while he also volunteered for the joint band program at Cummings High School.

Covington briefly worked at Andrews Elementary School as an assistant in 2005. He also worked part-time with the City of Burlington Recreation and Parks department but, was immediately terminated after his arrest.

The Alamance-Burlington School system released a statement regarding the case:

The safety, security, and well-being of all children in our care is our district’s highest priority. It is our expectation that every adult in every school adheres to our professional code of conduct that honors the unique, special bond of trust between students and teachers.
