GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The city of Greensboro is proposing to create its first mental health crisis response initiative.

  • Greensboro City Council Member, Michelle Kennedy, said the plan would increase services for people with mental health or substance abuse emergencies
  • Kennedy said the $500,000 proposal is modeled after a program that puts clinicians in the field to respond to these types of 911 calls instead of just the police department
  • Kennedy said they're looking to create this initiative with the upcoming budget cycle, so they can get this program started in the next year

Greensboro City Council Member, Michelle Kennedy, said the plan would increase services for people with mental health or substance abuse emergencies.

Kennedy said the $500,000 proposal is modeled after a program that puts clinicians in the field to respond to these types of 911 calls instead of just the police department.

“Doing that doesn't provide an avenue for that person to receive the appropriate services they need in the best possible way so this is really a way to make sure that citizens of Greensboro are receiving the resources they need for the issue they are encountering at the moment,” explained Kennedy.

Kennedy said they're looking to create this initiative with the upcoming budget cycle, so they can get this program started in the next year.
