DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. -- A suspect is dead and a deputy has been injured in a Davidson County shooting. 

  • A suspect is now dead and a deputy was taken to the hospital after a shooting in Denton.
  • Deputies were responding to a disturbance call. 
  • The SBI is investigating. 

The incident happened around 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Highway 49 and Highway 8 in Denton.

Davidson Co. deputies were responding to a disturbance call. One of the deputies parked his car and there was then a foot chase where he chased the suspect, Dylan Michael Smith, down a road and through a field, into a wooded area.

The sheriff's office says Smith tried to grab the deputy's gun and during the fight was shot and killed.

The deputy was hurt, but not shot. He was taken to the hospital by fellow deputies, not EMS. He has non-life threatening injuries.

The SBI is investigating as they do with all officer-involved shootings.
