GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Tiny Homes Community Development, a non-profit, said it was on track to move several homeless people into homes at the start of the new year.
- One resident is scheduled to move into a home in mid-January, five others by the end of February.
- Funding and rainfall have set back move-in dates.
- The organization already began building more tiny homes in High Point.
The non-profit consists of volunteers building tiny homes for the homeless. One resident is scheduled to move into a home in mid-January, five others by the end of February.
The move-in dates were pushed back due to setbacks.
"It's been a difficult situation with funding, trying to use individual donors, house sponsorships to fund this project. And that makes it really difficult when you have to rely on the funds and having them to contact contractors," the executive board chair, Scott Jones said.
He said funding has not been the only difficulty.
"As everyone knows, we've had record rainfall this year. We've had snows in January and February timeframe, and then in December. We've really battled the weather on this site, and that really has delayed our plan to have every house occupied by Christmas," Jones added.
One formerly homeless man has helped build the homes through a volunteer initiative to teach the homeless construction skills. He is scheduled to move into one of the tiny homes in January.
"It will help me get back on my feet and start working on my future and clearing some wreckage of my past up. Just start taking care of myself like I'm supposed to. It's just kind of moving forward in the right direction," Phillip Gurrero said.
He said the organization has not just been helping build his home, but building him a new future.
"There's definitely a need for people that know how to build houses and whatnot. Now that I have a pretty good idea of how they're put together and what the process is, it will definitely help me land a job in the future," Gurrero added.
