A 24-year-old man died and six others were injured Sunday morning after a shooting on the campus of Elizabeth City State University, officials said.
Four of the people hurt were shot, according to the school, and three of them were students at the university. Their injuries are not considered life threatening.
The school said the person killed was not a student. His name has not yet been released.
The shooting occurred in the center of Elizabeth City State University's campus following Yard Fest, the final event of the historically Black university’s weeklong Viking Fest celebration, the school said in a statement.
A statement from the university's interim chancellor, Catherine Edmonds, said in part, "Like many of you, I am devastated by the shooting incident that took place over the weekend. Sadly, a 24-year-old man visiting our campus lost his life. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. I’m also sending support and well wishes to our students who were injured on Sunday. The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and community remain our highest priorities."
School leaders said resources will be on hand for students and faculty.
Classes have been canceled for Monday and Tuesday, university officials said, and classes will be remote for the remainder of the semester, which ends Friday, May 2. Officials said exams will also be delivered remotely.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Officials are asking anyone with information to please contact university police.
"I am grateful for the swift actions of ECSU Police, local law enforcement, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, whose coordinated response ensured the safety of our campus," Edmonds' statement said.
The UNC system school is in Elizabeth City, in the northeastern corner of North Carolina, about 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia. The university has about 2,300 students.
