BLADENBORO, N.C. -- People packed the First Baptist Church in Bladen County Tuesday and Wednesday to voice their concerns about the possibility of election fraud in the 9th congressional district.

  • The theme of the town hall was "stolen votes, not voices".
  • Many voters believe their ballots were mishandled, and many others say this isn't the first time this happened.
  • Organizers want residents to keep making their voices heard and say they plan to bus residents to the hearing in Raleigh in January.

The NC NAACP, Southern Coalition for Social Justice, Democracy North Carolina and other organizations put together the town hall meeting with the theme "stolen votes, not stolen voices".

Many voters believe their ballots were mishandled, and many others say this isn't the first time this happened.

Some residents came to the podium sharing their experiences and demanding answers.

“A young man told me that he would have to have a witness so he would have to take the unsealed ballots with him for someone to sign. He told me that he would return in a couple of days with the ballots. He never returned,” said resident Linda Baldwin.

"We've talked a lot about them stealing our votes and they've been doing that, probably since the 2008 elections when they stole votes from Will Breazeale, who's here tonight," said Rev. Dr. T Anthony Spearman, NC NAACP President.

Breazeale says he was beat in that Republican primary by a candidate who hired McCrae Dowless to help with campaigning.

Dowless is the same man at the center of the current investigation into the results of the 9th congressional district race.

"I didn't question it because I trust the leadership of our county board of elections and our state board of elections to do the right thing, but I don't trust them anymore," said Breazeale.

Organizers want residents to keep making their voices heard and say they plan to bus residents to the hearing in Raleigh in January.
