NORTH CAROLINA -- The investigation continues in regards to accusations of election fraud in North Carolina's 9th Congressional District race.

  • Bladen Co. DA says the State Board of Elections and Ethics is investigating three cases
  • Two of those cases involve political action committees and absentee ballots
  • The other case involves voter fraud and possible false statements

Last week, the North Carolina State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement unanimously voted to certify several elections, including the 9th District race. Later that week, the board called for an evidentiary hearing to investigate claims of tampering with absentee ballots.

The chairman of the NC Democratic Party is praising the investigation. "This election has been tainted and it is vital to our process of elections to the candidates and most important to the voters to find the truth,” said Wayne Goodwin.

The NC GOP released a statement to the media about the investigation saying in part: "The Board of Elections needs to immediately certify this race while continuing their investigation.  That is the ONLY appropriate step for the voters of the Ninth District as we prepare to convene a new Congress."

If the board finds there was tampering, they could call for a new election.

On Tuesday, the Bladen County district attorney spoke out about the ongoing investigation into claims of voter fraud.

DA Jon David says the State Board of Elections and Ethics is investigating three cases, two involving political action committees and absentee ballots.

David says the third involves voter fraud and possible false statements. The cases were opened by the State Elections Board in November 2016.

Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman has jurisdiction in the cases.

Also on Tuesday, the state's new Board of Elections released documents related to the investigations.
