BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C.-- More than 200 youth soccer teams from as far away as Texas are competing in the Southern Regional Championship Tournament.
- The event brings close to 15,000 visitors to the Triad.
- Tournament officials say that translates to more than $10 million in revenue.
- The top 14 teams from this tournament will move on to the National Youth Soccer Championship.
The event brings close to 15,000 visitors to the Triad, including 4,500 athletes and 10,000 fans.
Tournament officials said between shopping, eating and hotels that translates to more than $10 million in revenue to the local economy.
"It's a package deal, like you've gotta have a good complex. You have to have good hotels that allow us to work with them across the different states and you have to have the team behind it," said Don Bohnet, the tournament director. "You have to have a great complex and people who have fields that can accommodate a tournament of this size. This isn't something that everyone can do. Secondly, the volunteers, the local organizing committee and the government behind it are key to making this thing work because we have to have their support."
The top 14 teams from this tournament will move on to the National Youth Soccer Championship tournament in Frisco, Texas, starting July 23.
