GREENSBORO -- Cornerstone Charter Academy was operating out of two different facilities, but Wednesday it opened its new $23 million campus.

One by one car loads of students arrived ready for their first day of school.

"This has been a four year process of us getting to this site,” said Board of Directors President Karla Hall.

Before, the school was split. K-8 classrooms were located at the Cathedral of His Glory, and ninth graders used rooms at Calvary Christian Center. However, now they're all under one roof; an added comfort for once concerned parents.

"I was worried about my younger one once they got in middle school and her being in school alone, and now I don’t have to worry about that," said parent Kelly Balli.

For parent Mike Sorrells he likes the added level of consistency for his kids.

"I think that continuity is important, and I think that for some students it's more important than others. And for our family we've seen that it's been a good opportunity,” said Sorrells.

The campus features more than 60 classrooms and nearly 1,000 students, for now.

"We will be expanding one grade a year,” said Hall. “Last year we went to ninth grade. This year we're at tenth. And next year we'll be at eleventh and then finally twelfth."

Sophomore Chloe Fields has been attending Cornerstone since the sixth grade.

"I see a lot of improvements, and I am excited to see more students here and to be the first graduating class," said Fields.

The office building and the gym are still under construction. School officials anticipate work will be done by December.
