GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- The community comes together to help a Guilford County Sheriff Deputy's family who lost their home in a blaze after the patrol vehicle with two K-9 officers inside caught on fire in the driveway on Tuesday.

Eric and Angie Stanley along with their seven children and two other dogs were inside the Derby Drive home. Eric was on duty and stopped by for a lunch break. While inside, the family said it heard a banging noise and then noticed the vehicle was on fire with the K-9 officers inside. Stanley got the K-9 officers out of the car and the family initiated they’re evacuation plan and met at the Oak Tree in the backyard.

“The kids just reacted and they knew exactly what to do when I started screaming and yelling out instructions,” Angie said.

Everyone made it out safely but the house was destroyed.

“I mean he lost everything he had,” said Col. Randy Powers with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office. “There was nothing recoverable in that house."

A devastation that’s inspired many in the community to help the family by donating clothes, household goods, and other necessities.

"I can't tell you enough that, when you reach out to someone who is going through something like this, how much it means to be the one on the other side,” Angie said.

"It's just overwhelming the love and support we’ve gotten from everybody,” Eric said.

Hillcrest Baptist Church in Kernersville, where the family worships, started a collection that’s overflowed into a second room. The pastor, Jason Murray, said donations are coming in from all over the Piedmont Triad.

“Individuals, companies, churches, fire departments, police departments. All of those.”

Some of the items in the rooms include bags of apparel, paper goods, shoes, games and art supplies.

“Angie, the mom, is an artist and she teaches art to her kids and a lot of kids, including mine,” Murray said.

Angie also homeschools the couple’s children who range between ages four and 16. Murray said he’s waiting to release a list of school items needed to help the students commence their studies again.

“These two rooms of things, money, will help them to get consistent again and then we can figure out what’s missing. What do we need for school? What are the basics that we need for that."

A family member also set up a crowdfunding page to assist the family.

“We just can't say enough thanks,” Angie said.
